Today is a national holiday in Japan - Respect for the Aged Day. It became a national holiday in 1966, originally celebrated on September 15. It became a "Happy Monday" holiday in 2003 and has been held on the third Monday of September since then.
I love living in Japan for many many reasons. Japanese people have a holiday to show respect for their elders. How can anyone not be happy about that?
I agree. This day can be enjoyed by everyone: the OAPs are celebrated with gifts and delicious meals, they are visited by their younger family members, if the grandchildren are lucky, they might get some pocket money from grandpa and grandma, school children don't have to go to school, most people have a day off work, those who do work (e.g. part-time workers at events) have an extra chance of income, those who run businesses at events, hotels and eateries can also make money those of us who have the day off and can't go out because of the approaching typhoon can sit home and stitch!
I like the title of that, Hapy Monday..sounds so much nicer than our Bank Holiday Monday. One of which we have had on the same day this year, whilst it was for a sad occasion in this instance, I guess it did make us consider and appreciate our aged. Maybe we could do with a Happy Monday like yours.
